Anthony Feinman has recently completed his first comic book story for
his father's comic book company, Ink and Feathers Comics. The story, Escape
In a Dirigible, took him four years to complete. Based on his father's
comic book reporter character of Terry Freedom, Escape is a prequel to
Myke Feinman's first two books, The Mask Conspiracy
and The Crystal Skull Files.
"It's been a long road for me", says Anthony. 'When my father and
I originally plotted out this story, I was only planning for 20 pages. When
I finally completed all the drawing in early July (2003), my short 20 page
story turned into a 44 page story illustrated. That's twice the drawing I
had originally planned on! I must add that my hands are really tired."
Anthony has been drawing non-stop for two months everyday after work to make
his deadline. He claims it was liking working two jobs.
"Even after I was finished with the illustrations, I was still not finished.
I still had to add my lettering onto the pages digitally and paginate two
stories into a book form. I was waiting on the artist for the backup feature
that appears at the end of my story to complete his work. Until he finished,
I couldn't complete all the pagination and send everything off to the printers.
My deadline was the first week of August. I didn't finish until the last week
of July. It was a very stressful time for me."
Unfortunately, Anthony has only been able to do a limited 76 page prepublication
version at this time. He hopes to have a perfect bound version by early 2004.
The reason for the delay is that for the past few months Anthony has been
going through and correcting spelling errors, adding extra pages, and being
a perfectionist. The prepub was not up to his specifications. One of the mistakes
he had to fix was right on the cover. In a hurry to get his story out in time
for WiizardCon 2003, He misspelled "Dirigible" in his title adding
an extra "I". He claims because of that mistake, the prepub will
be worth hundreds of dollars more after the final version hits bookstores.
So, what was the reason for Anthony's story doubling in size? During the
course of those four years in the making, Anthony's father decided that some
extra subplots should be added. He had Anthony introduce previous characters
from the first two books. This required Anthony to rewrite his origianl short
story.
"It was a challenge
since when we had this discussion, I had already drawn the first two chapters.
Luckily, the story was still developing so I could add some plot twists. However,
I had to go back and research the stoylines in dad's previous books."
The female lead that Myke wanted Anthony to add was not supposed to meet
Terry's sidekick until 1936. Anthony's story takes place in 1918, eighteen
years before the first book takes place. Anthony need to do some clever writing.
Adding to the confusion, Myke threw Anthony another loop by telling him
to plot his short story to be the precursor for the third and concluding
book, The B.U.C.K.S Stop Here.
"The only hint I can give the reading audience when they read this story
is to read The Mask Conspiracy and The Crystal Skull Files first. Then read
Escape In A Dirigible. Escape is a stand alone story and can be enjoyed as
such but some of it may be confusing with the addition of the new characters.
All I can say for the moment is that the third installment deals with time
travel. that may help to explain why a certain character makes a brief appearance
in my story."
Though
this forty page story sounds like a project that should have been completed
years ago, this has not been the only project Anthony has been working on.
He has been shooting digital photgraphy for his father's latest two stories
involving a teddy bear, Scoop Schaumburg.
"I did photo work for dad's sixteen page short story, In
Search of the First Teddy Bear, that he originally published
online back in early 2002. He decided to print it in book form that fall.
I not only did the photo work but the pagination on it as well. Myke then
began writing his new novel, The Teddy Bear Conspiracies.
I've been working on putting together 20 pictures for that book as well.
It is scheduled to be released early 2004. It took me roughly six months
to work on those photos in between working on my story and my 8 to 5 job.
I'm probably going to need to see an eye doctor soon with all the time
I've been staring at a computer moniter."
